We have eight units of content designed to take you from beginner to a fully certified SEO expert. Although the course only takes as little as 4 weeks of part-time study, it'll take years to fully master SEO.
Step 2: Practice

Unit 2: Theory & History of SEO
You’ll often hear terms like Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, and Bert thrown around in regards to SEO. But what do they mean? We briefly touch on the history of SEO so you know what worked in the past which is no longer recommended. Unit 2 also breaks down the theory of SEO, answering everyone’s main questions “How do I rank well?”.

No, you don’t need an SEO certification, much in the same way you don’t need a marketing or programming certification. What a certification does is positions you above all other candidates when applying for an SEO job, or submitting a proposal to win freelance SEO work.

Yes. As with all certifications, an SEO certification helps to demonstate that you have been assessed by a neutral third-party whom can vouch for you and your skills. An SEO certification can help earn more freelance jobs, or land a fulltime job as an SEO Analyst, Coordinator, or Manager.

No, there is no specialized WordPress SEO certification available from the Search Ranking Instiute. All our courses and certifications teach SEO skills that apply to all platforms, including WordPress.
What’s with the online SEO certification exam?
Our online SEO certification exam should take you no longer than 60 minutes, and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. It includes a multichoice theory test, then a review of your work.
Should I just take a Udemy SEO certification?
We recommend against it. A lot of the Udemy certification courses are out of date, and might actually teach SEO techniques that could harm your’s or your clients websites. Of course we recommend viewing our own SEO certification courses, but if you are looking for alternatives stick to other known SEO certification courses such as Yoast, ClickMinded, Moz, and MarketMotive.
What does SEO certification cost?
The Search Ranking Insitute offers two levels of SEO certification: Standard and Gold. We do this to provide an “entry level” SEO certification for people who might not currently be in the industry, and has no experience on a live website. The Gold SEO certification costs slightly more due to the manual audit we will do of a website under your management. In terms of what SEO certification costs, we can’t answer that simply here, since our prices are designed with Purchasing Power Parity in mind. This means developing nations can access our SEO courses as slightly cheaper prices.

Is there a SEO fundamentals certification course?
Our ‘Standard’ course could be what you consider an SEO fundamentals certification course. Although it does begin to teach some advanced strategy, it also covers all the fundamentals as if you were new to SEO. This is why our course is good for SEO beginners and experts a like.
Is this an accredited SEO certification?
Since there is no national or global association responsible for overseeing SEO certifications, there is no method for any course to be providing what could be called an accredited SEO certification. Unlike, say, architecture or civil enginerring, anyone can learn and offer SEO services without being certified. For these reasons there is no need for an accreditation organication, and no need to look for an accredited SEO certification.
Should I get a SEO certification from a university?
You can, but you’ll be paying a lot for it! Sure, saying you have an SEO certification from a known prestigoous University might look good, but are you actually getting good value for money? Or are you paying for the prestige?

This is (partly) why we created the Search Marketing Institute in 2020. Finding a course the specialises in SEO near where you live can be hard, unless you live in a select 10 or so cities worldwide. If you are outside of these areas, finding an SEO course which is actually good can be difficult, which is why we started designing our online SEO course and certification.
Which certification does a SEO professional need to have?
A SEO professional legally doesn’t need any certification, but a certification can make it easier to get a job in the industry, or get more freelance clients. For a person focusing solely on an SEO career, then obviously a specific SEO certification like those offered at the Search Ranking Institute will help the most. To supplement your SEO certification, additional courses on search marketing (paid search), digital marketing, and even copywriting can help significantly.
Is this a good Brightedge certification alternative?
Yes, a certification from the Search Ranking Institute is a good alternative to the Brightedge certificaiton. Both courses cover generally the same content, although you do not have to be a Brightedge customer to enrol in our certification (to get the Brightedge certification you need to be a customer of theirs).
